The Mana of Corporate Politics

Introductory and overview

Corporate politics is often treated like a mysterious and slightly sinister game played behind closed doors. In reality, it is a resource-management system. Your political capital is your mana pool, workplace actions are spells, and every spell has a cost. Using the familiar mechanics of RPGs, card games, and strategy games, this session gives attendees a practical framework for navigating organizational dynamics without becoming manipulative or pretending politics does not exist. We will examine common workplace “spells,” recognize when others are casting them, and explore how audience size, timing, credibility, and relationships affect their cost. Attendees will leave better equipped to decide when to speak up, how to build support before making a significant proposal, and how to challenge decisions without accidentally exhausting their influence. Because the goal is not to hoard political capital or play dirty. It is to build trust, spend it deliberately, and know when an issue is worth casting your biggest spell.
